Congratulations to Juan Castrillon!

Juan has received a SAS Hopkinson Fellowship for AY 17-18 in recognition of his superlative academic performance in our graduate program. 

Juan Castrillon, (Ph.D. candidate in Ethnomusicology) University of Pennsylvania publishes

paper co-authored with Jonathan Hill in Oído Pensante, Sound Studies journal in South America.  "Narrativity in Sound: A Sound-Centered Approach to Indigenous Amazonian Ways of Managing Relations of Alterity".

Tristan Pare-Morin, Ph.d. Candidate in Musicology, awarded

one of the 18 grants by the distinguished Chateaubriand fellowship program.  The Chateaubriand Fellowship in Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) targets outstanding Ph.D. students from American universities who seek to engage in research in France, in any discipline of the Humanities and Social Sciences. This fellowship is offered by the Cultural Services of the Embassy of France. HSS Chateaubriand fellows are selected through a merit-based competition, using a binational collaborative process involving expert evaluators from both countries.

Dr. Jeffrey Kallberg, Professor of Music and Associate Dean for Arts and Letters, featured on WHYY's "Articulate"

The June 5th, 2017 episode of WHYY'S ARTICULATE entitled "Goldberg Variations:  Timeless Virtuosity" features Dr. Jeffrey Kallberg, Professor of Music and Associate Dean for Arts and Letters in the School of Arts and Sciences.  Pianists Jeremy Denk and Simone Dinnerstein are also featured in the segment. 

Exciting New Release from Matthew Clayton, Director of our Jazz Combo Ensemble.

 His release, The First Traveler, is a mixtape that features a live performance of the Matthew Clayton Trio!  In addition to Matthew Clayton on alto saxophone, we have Justin Sekelewski on bass and Khary Shaheed on drums.   The music also features the first official release of a Clayton original composition: "Matthew's Groove"!  Lastly, there is an interview following the music, where Matthew covers some of his ideas about music in general and the performance in particular.  This all has been released as a free download!   Get the music here:

Professor Jay Reise's Opera, Rasputin, Performed in Moscow's New Stravinsky Hall

Feb. 10 & 11 Professor Jay Reise's opera Rasputin was performed in Moscow's new state-of-the-art Stravinsky Hall, home of the Helikon Opera Theater just outside the Kremlin. Dmitry Bertman's spectacular production, with a new stellar cast (headed by Grigory Soloviev in the title role who was heard recently in the Metropolitan Opera's production of Shostakovich's The Nose), was led by Australian conductor Alexander Briger.
