Enjoy the variety of colorful, eccentric and unique visual references in “Pictures as an Exhibition” by Modest Mussorgsky. Originally written as a musical tribute to the composer’s friend, a distinguished Russian architect and artist, who died unexpectedly, the piece is a vibrant depiction of paintings and drawings. From there, we hear the tone poem, Scheherazade by Nicolay Rimsky-Korsakov, a symphonic interpretation of the well-known story, “One Thousand and One Arabian Nights.” Come join us as we continue our celebration of live music!

The University of Pennsylvania Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1878 and is comprised of musicians from throughout the University community, primarily non-music majors. The ensemble rehearses for four hours each week and performs a diverse range of repertoire drawn from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth Centuries. More information.
