Penn Symphony Orchestra

April 26, 2024 (Friday) – 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM
Irvine Auditorium
3401 Spruce St
Philadelphia, PA 19104

Exploring the coloristic elements of orchestra music, we present two composers who were masters of such expressivity and eloquence.  The Italian composer Respighi's Pines of Rome has been a fan favorite for many decades.  His use of orchestral sounds to paint various imageries is unparalleled, possessing a special understanding of instrumental techniques.  The French composer Saint-Saëns wrote his enormously popular "Organ" symphony at the height of his artistic career, imbuing limitless sparkle and elan.  The work also features the world-renown Curtis Organ which makes its home in Irvine auditorium.  We are thrilled to present this magnificent instrument to the public once more.  Don't miss this chance to hear the PSO and the Curtis Organ in performance together!

ABOUT

The University of Pennsylvania Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1878 and is comprised of musicians from throughout the University community, primarily non-music majors. The ensemble rehearses for four hours each week and performs a diverse range of repertoire drawn from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth Centuries. The Penn Symphony Orchestra rehearses and performs in historic Irvine Auditorium on Penn’s Campus. Due to the increased number of student participation, the ensemble has expanded to two ensembles with rotating/interchangeable personnel. More information.
