ABOUT ROSCOE MITCHELL
Roscoe Mitchell is an American composer, multi-instrumentalist, and pioneering figure in avant-garde jazz and contemporary classical music. A founding member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Mitchell has spent decades pushing the boundaries of improvisation, composition, and sound experimentation. His groundbreaking 1966 album Sound redefined jazz with its focus on texture and silence, setting the stage for a career marked by innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. From solo saxophone explorations to orchestral works, Mitchell’s output—including People in Sorrow, Nonaah, and Bells for the South Side—reflects both intellectual rigor and deep emotional expression. His work continues to influence generations of musicians across genres.
