ABOUT

Penn Samba, an ensemble open to the entire community at Penn and comprising some 100 members, performs a wide variety of rhythms from many different regions of Brazil. Instruments, used in the ensemble include the surdo, caixa, repinique, tamborim, gaiza, and agogo, among others. No prior musical, sight-reading, or percussion experience is necessary, and all instruments are provided. Penn Samba is currently divided into three sections according to skill level: a select advanced section of seasoned members, an intermediate section for those with significant experience, and an introductory section for those new to Brazilian percussion. In addition to weekly rehearsals, Penn Samba organizes performances throughout the course of the semester. More information.
