The University of Pennsylvania Choir will perform a concert version of the Baroque opera, Dido and Aeneas, by Henry Purcell. The Penn Choir, including nine soloists drawn from their ranks, will be accompanied by a professional instrumental ensemble.
Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas is England's first, and perhaps greatest opera. Filled with beautiful arias and delightful choruses, the opera tells the tragic tale of two star-crossed lovers driven apart by the cruel hand of Fate. The roles of good and evil are clearly and sometimes humorously defined in the solo characters, with the Sorceress and her witches plotting to destroy the love between Dido and Aeneas. The chorus too assumes different roles, shifting their voices between Dido's courtiers and the band of witches and elves.
