The Daedalus Quartet, a premier string quartet in residence at the University of Pennsylvania since 2006, has generously offered to be part of an open rehearsal with the express purpose of helping others understand the group dynamics that inform their practice and performance. Although much has been written and discovered about the dynamics of groups, musical groups, especially quartets that work together so intensively, are rarely examined. This evening will give us a window into the verbal and nonverbal group dynamics that influence the quartet’s life and the music that they make together. After a time of rehearsal by the Daedalus Quartet, Dr. Kaminstein will engage the quartet in a discussion about the group dynamics that surfaced during the rehearsal. Near the end of the evening questions from the audience will be entertained. This is a rare opportunity to see how an acclaimed quartet works as a group and what all of us can learn from their interactions.
