The University of Pennsylvania Choir concert will feature a Venetian Vesper service by Claudio Monteverdi. Scored for chorus and soloists, accompanied by an ensemble of strings, winds, and harpsichord, the work is a compilation of movements that were likely composed for Vespers at Saint Mark’s Cathedral in Venice. The Choir will also perform the Marienlieder (Songs of Mary) by Brahms, a cycle of folk-like songs about the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene; and three works by Charles Ives: Serenity, the Sixty-seventh Psalm, and The Circus Band. On the same program the University Chamber Singers will perform a set of Italian madrigals by Willaert, Lassus, Isaac and Arcadelt.
