Glenda Goodman Receives Two Awards from The American Musicological Society
As part of the American Musicological Society's 2021 prizes and awards, Glenda Goodman has been recognized for the following works: Her book, Cultivated By Hand, won the Lewis Lockwood award, and her article Bound Together: The Intimacies of Music-Book Collecting in Early American Republic was awarded the Alfred Einstein award.

Mary Channen-Caldwell presents work at Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute, hosted by the Musicology Department
The Peabody Musicology Department invites Mary Channen-Caldwell, Assistant Professor of Music for the Department of Music at Penn, to present her work, "Singing from the Cross: Christ’s Voice and the Treading of the Winepress in Thirteenth-Century France." Part of the Musicology Colloquia series, this event is free and open to the public, and can be accessed through the Peabody website.

Kevin Laskey premieres new concert-length piece at Kaleidoscope Performing Arts Center
Kevin Laskey, (PhD, Composition ’19), will premiere a new concert-length piece at Ursinus College’s Kaleidoscope Performing Arts Center on Saturday, November 13 at 7:30 PM. The Snow, Like Me (A Pre-apocalyptic Cabaret) features soprano Molly Netter, pianist Mikael Barmaine, and bassist Pat Swoboda.

Juan Castrillón films featured permanently on Society for Cultural Anthropology website
On October 14, the Visual and New Media Review of the Society for Cultural Anthropology will feature Rehavi (Timekeepers) and Kiraiñia (Long Flutes), two films produced by Juan Castrillón. The films will be hosted permanently at the Screening Room section of the SCA’s website for open access in their multilingual versions.

Delia Casadei, Penn Alumna and Assistant Professor of Musicology of UC Berkeley Presents New Work at Penn on October 12
The Department of Music is thrilled to welcome back Penn Alumna Delia Casadei who is now an Assistant Professor of Musicology at UC Berkeley. She has published work on the intersection of voice, ideologies of language and intelligibility, and politics in twentieth century Italian music. Her latest essay, Vico Signifying Nothing, is out in the Spring 2021 Issue of Representations and concerns the relationship of sound and theories of history in Giambattista Vico’s writings.

"Papillon and the Dancing Cranes" - Natacha Diels / Nadar Ensemble in Antwerp
Over the weekend on Saturday, September 25, Natacha Diels, Composer & Assistant Professor of Music at Penn and Nadar Ensemble presented a performance of EPIC proportions. "Papillon and the Dancing Cranes" by the American composer Natacha Diels is a repetitive and danceable composition. Her whole life, Diels has been fascinated by construction cranes. Despite their simple shape, they are gracious and form a decorative element in a city’s skyline. In Diels’ world, they are revealed as living characters. They execute a choreography in counterpoint to the music.

FETA presents Meet the Artist: Bryan Jacobs, the 2015 Feta Prize in Sound Art winner on Wednesday, September 29 at 7PM on Zoom
FETA Foundation is presenting another edition of “Meet the Artist” that highlights creations of the past FETA Prize in Sound Art winners, finalists and judges through monthly show and chat sweet sessions. On Wednesday, September 29, at 7 pm EST on Zoom, they invite you to e-meet Bryan Jacobs, the 2015 FETA Prize in Sound Art Winner. Along with his winning work “Subwhistle," Bryan will present several other sound art projects.

Dr. Lily Kass (Ph.d. Musicology 2017) appointed Scholar in Residence for Opera Philadelphia
This position helps to solidify Opera Philadelphia’s commitment to offer learning opportunities around the operatic works we produce. The Scholar in Residence’s work will focus on contextualizing Opera Philadelphia’s productions, providing an avenue for our audience to deepen their relationship with opera while gaining a greater appreciation for relevancy of opera to today’s world. Natacha Diels Receives 2021 Barlow Competition Award to Write New Work for JACK Quartet
Congratulations to Natacha Diels, Assistant Professor of Music who is a General Commission Recipient of the Barlow Endowment, which will go towards writing new work for JACK Quartet. She is one of nine composers selected from a competitive group of 259 applications.

Announcing Auditions for All Departmental Ensembles for the 2021-2022 Academic Year
All Penn students are invited and encouraged to continue their music making as a member of one of the Music Department’s many ensembles, which are open to all students regardless of major. Some ensembles are even open to the entire Penn community, including graduate students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Auditions for the Penn Music ensembles begin on Monday, August 30 and continue through Tuesday, September 7.
