Penn Jazz Ensembles

The Penn Jazz Ensembles consists of small (3-6 member) jazz ensembles which meet weekly for rehearsals coached by professional Philadelphia-based jazz musicians. Repertoire is extremely varied and includes early jazz, 1950's-era straight ahead jazz, Cuban jazz, vocal jazz, jazz arrangements of current popular music, and other styles. Instrumental performance and improvisation are emphasized but vocalists are welcomed.

Students are encouraged and supported in bringing their own compositions and arrangements for their ensemble to play; instruction in arranging is a main focus during rehearsals. The more advanced ensembles have the option of focusing on music production, recording, and mixing in addition to preparing for their performances.

The ensembles are grouped by students' level of jazz experience. Each semester culminates in a recital featuring the best work from each ensemble.

Rehearsal Schedule
