The percussion/piano quartet Yarn/Wire presents music written by 7 UPenn student composers: Susanna Payne-Passmore, Erin Busch, Brendan McMullen, Kristopher Bendrick, William Stewart, Flannery Cunningham, and James Diaz. These works have been developed over the last year, in close communication with the members of the ensemble. This concert is the culmination of Yarn/Wire’s year-long residency at UPenn.
ABOUT
Russell Greenberg and Sae Hashimoto, percussion
Laura Barger and Julia Den Boer, piano
We founded Yarn/Wire in 2005: four like-minded friends who were graduate students at SUNY Stony Brook. There was no plan, just a desire to play music together. After exhausting the pre-existing available music confined under the new-music umbrella, we realized in that in order to keep playing, we would have to actively create music with in partnership with our peers: composers, sound artists, noise musicians and more around the world. This allowed us to better reflect our sprawling interests and tastes while supporting the varied voices and backgrounds of those around us. After 16 years, there’s still no real plan - we are still as curious and in love with music as the earlier days of the ensemble, and we’re just as dedicated to finding depth and value in the music we believe in.
